Chapter 9 Sins

Mauve froze in position and her arms went limp. She tried to digest the shocking truth revealed. Is this why you stopped me … last night?

Then she tried to turn her head and look up at him, in an attempt to get a good look at his visage and decipher his thoughts.

However, he tightened his hold on her to stop her while recounting the tragedy in an uncannily detached manner, “That accident … when I steered my car into an oncoming truck … Olivia … she was gone before she knew what had happened.”

Mauve could detect the slight quiver in his voice as he continued, “I wonder which fate is worse: to be fed on by those bloodthirsty creatures, suffering a prolonged death like my parents and that truck driver, or getting a quick death but not knowing that one had become a ghost bound to the site of death, waiting for someone … anyone.”

The lady could not help consoling, “You did go for her, releasing her from the state of limbo.”

“I wanted to see her again. Every night, I sat at our dining table—the place where we used to share happenings of the day … I thought we would do that till old age… I pretended she was sitting opposite me. And we chatted through the night,” he confessed while lowering his head.

Is this what led him to become a custodian? A dull pain manifested within her chest and intensified with each additional thought dwelling on his plight and past. “You could have told her the truth.…”

Mauve could feel his fingers sliding over her back to close into fists; and the man was shaking his head as he lamented, “I did. She didn’t believe me.”

“Her last words …” He paused as his body trembled. “I could see it in her eyes when she asked why. Yet I didn’t hesitate to send Ivan onto her and … our child she was carrying.”

“No …” choked Mauve as tear droplets gathered at the bottom of her eyes.

She instinctively slid her arms around his torso. This is too cruel for you. How did you live with it?

Time seemed to halt even though seconds had ticked by. The unwillingness to do anything else and the desire to sink into that cradle of shared agony saturated the psyches.

Then all of a sudden, he pushed her away.

Staggering backward a bit before steadying herself, Mauve smiled bitterly. This is so expected, right? Who dares to assume the impossible will happen? That you’ll hold onto me for no specific purpose?

Staring into Mauve’s eyes, he began to lightly shake his head. “You can’t have feelings for me. You’ll be too drawn to this world till your spiritual links decay into oblivion.”

She immediately sniggered. “You’re flattering yourself. I’m not.”

While studying her expression, Lucien gathered his brows, hardened his jaws and pursed his lips. Then he asserted, “I’m sorry, but I have to verify.”

The man grabbed her by the nape of her neck and curled his arm around her waist before locking his lips over hers.
